Dr. Nigil Haroon, MD, PhD, DM, FACR,
is the Co-Director of the spondylitis program at the University Health Network, a scientist at the Krembil Research Institute and an Associate Professor of medicine and rheumatology at the University of Toronto. He has held several national and international leadership positions including Chair of the Scientific Committee of Spondyloarthritis Research and Training Network (SPARTAN) of America, Chair of SpA abstracts committee American College of Rheumatology and Chair of Wait Time Alliance Committee of the Canadian Rheumatology Association.
Dr. Haroon is an internationally renowned clinician scientist in the field of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). He has won several awards including the Jane Bruckel Award of the Spondylitis Association of America and the Young Investigator Award of the Canadian Rheumatology Association.
Dr. Haroon has a well-established translational research program at the University Health Network, Toronto and is known for his work in functional genomics of AS. His program is funded by CIHR, The Arthritis Society and The Krembil Foundation. He has published paradigm-shifting studies in AS including the work on disease modification in AS (Arthritis and Rheumatology) with TNF inhibitors and the largest population based study in AS that showed a significant increased risk of AS patients dying from heart attacks and strokes.
